Katja Herbers is a daughter of Vera Beths who plays the violin, and Werner Herbers on oboe. As a child Katja Herbers went with her mother on a trip through America in the chamber orchestra L'Archibudelli. Her mother was remarried to cellist Anner Bylsma and her father was remarried to costume designer Leonie Poliak, who introduced her stage. While growing up she had an au pair who came from Canada. She learned Dutch German English. Herbers studied at the Ignatius Gymnasium in Amsterdam. She completed her degree in psychology in the University of Amsterdam. When she was studying psychology, she also was a student at De Trap theatre school. She moved into New York and went to the HB Studio. After that, she was accepted to the Theaterschool in Amsterdam. In her time at the school, she was a star in the films Pietje Bell and Brush with Fate . Herbers became a part of in the Johan Simons Theater Company NTGent, Ghent after graduating. In Germany Herbers later became one of the founders of the famed Munich Kammerspiele. Theu Boermans, Alex van Warmerdam and Ivo Van Hove were some of the directors she collaborated alongside. They were the directors in several Schnitzler works including Fraulein Else. The role she played in Irina from Chekhov's Three Sisters won her the Guido de Moor Award as an emerging talent in 2013.
